The Blank Canvas

I purchased a 30x 40 canvas the other day and am planning to paint something to hang in our bedroom. Barec pulled the last one down and it crashed beyond what I am willing to repair. Anyhow, a few days have passed and the canvas is still blank. I'm not sure what I should paint or in what style. I don't feel like I am an "artist" enough to have my own artistic voice, (especially in oils) so I usually cruise through other painters' work for inspiration. Here are a few of the paintings that really grab me.

Carmine - Natalie Shau

Circle of Seasons - Ilana Manolson

Enterado - Frank Gonzales
I'm really into deconstructed and drippy forms right now. I think they are just fantastic. And while I'm at it. Here is a sculptor, Dessa Kirk, that I think is great. I would love to do something like this, maybe on a smaller scale in my own garden some day. I love the greek mythological reference and the combination of art with nature.

Daphne Gardens - Photo by Joe Lekas
Hopefully my canvas won't stay blank for very long. I will take pictures of the process when I get going. This will be my second, yes that is correct, second oil ever, so I have a bit of trepidation going into this project.

These seem a little dark to me. Maybe being prayerful about your choice will help you pick just the right subject. You'll probably be looking at that painting for many years to come. - Mom

I love the images you posted, especially the first one. The darks and lights/contrasts. The movement they all have. The realistic style portraying the fanciful. I do think for over the bed you might want to think about something that won't give your wife or son more nightmares might be good though. Ha ha ha. And don't be afraid of the canvas, it is slow drying so you have lots of time to change things you don't like, and you can always paint over it. Have fun, and I am excited to see what you come up with!
