Ok, this one has had me hung up for about a week now. I was struggling with the idea that I might be convincing myself that I am passionate about my job when in fact I really just tolerate it. Well I have come to a conclusion that passion or job, there are facets of any activity, be it work or play, that I just don't enjoy. It all comes down to the give and take relationship between you and your work.
Late last week I heard a quote on the radio by Winston Churchill* that said, "You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give." While struggling through the theme for this post and listening to that quote on the radio, I was struck by the connection between the two. When you invest yourself in your work, heart, mind and soul, the possible return is quite valuable. If you don't put anything into it, then its just a day-to-day monotonous task.
So, while I really enjoy painting, falconry, and church, and I'm passionate about them, I can't ignore that I'm passionate about my day job too. I LOVE teaching, I find it extremely rewarding.
*NPR misquoted Churchill who was actually just quoting Arthur J. Balfour.

I totally agree with you about teaching. It certainly has aspects that I hate. *ahem* attendance policies *ahem* However, at least weekly, if not daily, I have experiences that make it all worth it.
