Today I went to the Terre Haute field meet for the Indiana Falconry Association.
It's been an interesting season this year because early in the season there were lots of rabbits everywhere we hunted. In the 5 years that I have been involved in falconry, I have never seen so many rabbits in one season. But over the last few weeks, it appears that the numbers of rabbits has dropped off drastically. It may be disease, or just the extremely cold weather a few weeks ago or something else entirely. I don't know. Anyhow, today was a challenge, and the first time I have been out hunting that we got skunked. It wasn't for lack of rabbits, because we saw a few, but something just seemed off. The brush seemed thicker than usual, the rabbits quicker and smarter, the hawks less intent on the kill. Whatever it was, things didn't work out to get a kill. Having said that, we still had a great time, ate great food and got to see some absolutely beautiful flights by the birds...and that really what its all about.
