As the Crow Flies

Painting by Dave Bloomfield
I have a special loathing for Crows. I don't know where it originates or where it ends. They are black ugly, thieving creatures who must play some unmistakable role in nature's web, but I just can't put my finger on it. Today's National Geographic picture of the day  shows a whole bunch of them in Northern California. Yeah, and guess what a big group of these monsters is called....

...a Murder of Crows. That's right...it's a gaggle of geese, a covey of quail, a sedge of cranes, a cote of doves, an aerie of eagles, a charm of goldfinches, a hedge of herons, a descent of woodpeckers, even a colony of vultures. But a Murder of crows? Are you kidding me?

One day during lunch at P.V. middle school I was outside and a very large murder of crows gathered from all directions right over us. It was so large the shadow was like a cloud covering the school. They circled for about 5 minutes then all flew away in together. It was my first experience with them and it totally cheeped me out. Since I have felt the same way about them as you apparently do. Even those nasty bald buzzards that feed on dead stuff don't creep me out the way a crow/raven can.

Bryan calls them the rats of the air. Along with magpies.
