Juliana and I visited the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland today for some time away. After parking the car and getting out to walk about the town, we could smell the brine of the sea and savory scents emanating from the many oyster bars.
We visited a private home museum called the Hammond Harwood Home that was built in 1774 and boasted some beautiful colonial architecture.
We walked through the Maryland State capital building and toured the room where George Washington resigned as general.
We also visited the US Naval Academy and the Naval Museum. They have a whole floor dedicated to the display of model ships.
This last ship is made of bone. It was built by French prisoners in England who saved the bones from their rations and carved these ships from memory. They would sell them to the gentry in the street markets of London for extra cash to buy food and clothing.
We ended the evening by visiting the Zagat's rated Cantler's restaurant for fresh seafood. And let me tell you, it was amazing.
We had steamed oysters, muscles, shrimp, clams, Chesapeake Bay blue crab, scallops, rockfish, stuffed shrimp and crab cakes. We may have gone a little overboard (ha ha pun intended), but being landlocked in Indiana, we felt like it was worth it, and man was it worth it.
